Hikers coming to the Winding Stair Gap/Hwy 64 junction in Macon County usually can’t pass up the temptation to hitch a ride 11 miles down the road to this hiker-friendly town. Franklin sits close to 110 miles north of Springer Mountain, a perfect resupply point between Clayton or Hiawassee, GA and NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) at Wesser, NC. As an Appalachian Gateway Community, Franklin, NC thanks you for stopping here and we certainly hope you enjoy your time at the Franklin Trail Days Celebration. With you in mind, the Town of Franklin has compiled this guide to help you get around town and highlight several points of interest in the community you might find helpful. Free Hiker Breakfast at Franklin's First Baptist Church The First Baptist Church of Franklin, NC provides a free breakfast to A.T. hikers daily starting in mid March through mid April, at 7:15am. All the pancakes and bacon you can eat. Van pickup available. In addition to the breakfast, the church offers to take a photo of each hiker and mail it to a friend or loved one along with a note written by the hiker, leaving hikers with a full belly and fond Franklin memories. |

Hiker Services • Take a Ride with Macon County Transit! In addition to private party shuttles, Macon County Transit will provide a Monday through Friday shuttle at the beginning of March through mid May, for hikes at an affordable $5.00 fare per boarding. Hikers will be picked up at Winding Stair Gap and Rock Gap at the designated times below. If hikers need transportation back to the trail, they can call Macon County Transit at (828) 349-2222.
At other times of the year a full roster of volunteers is available to assist hikers with shuttle rides, those who may need medical assistance, supplies, etc. |
